While women may experience depression no matter what option they choose, depression is a possible side effect of abortion. The choice is yours to make, but if you’re considering adoption, you have more than one adoption option.
Abortion Risks
Along with the serious physical risks that come with abortion, depression is a big hurdle that some women struggle to overcome after abortion.
According to a study, abortion increases a woman’s chances of developing mental health struggles. After abortion, women may experience the following:
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Substance use disorder
- Suicidal thoughts or behaviors
Though adoption is not easy, it could help prevent the serious depression that can come with abortion.
Adoption Options
Adoption has dramatically improved over the years, allowing birth mothers more of a say in the process. You have three adoption plan options if considering adoption, including:
- Open adoption: With this option, you can choose the adoptive family you want to raise your baby, and you maintain contact with them. You can also decide how involved you want to be in your child’s life.
- Semi-open adoption: You can still have contact with your child, but an adoption agency will help manage communication between you, the child, and the adoptive family. All of your identifying information is kept confidential.
- Closed adoption: Sometimes privacy is best for both parties with adoption. With closed adoption, there is no contact made with your child, and all parties’ identities are kept confidential. The court keeps adoption records sealed.
