Considering abortion is a serious decision, and going into it without complete medical information can put your health at risk. Before making any decision about your pregnancy, there are a few things worth knowing.

At Rockingham Pregnancy Care Center, we offer medical-grade pregnancy testing, ultrasound referrals, and peer counseling with an RN to help you get the full picture before moving forward.

An Ultrasound Matters More Than You Might Realize

A positive pregnancy test tells you hCG is present in your body. It doesn’t tell you how far along you are, whether the pregnancy is developing, or where it’s located. An ultrasound fills in those gaps, and those details matter.

Here’s what an ultrasound can reveal:

  • Viability: Whether the pregnancy is progressing and a heartbeat is detectable. Up to 26% of pregnancies end in miscarriage, often without obvious symptoms. A positive test can remain positive even after a pregnancy has ended.
  • Gestational age: How far along you are. The abortion pill is FDA-approved only through 10 weeks of gestation, and accuracy matters here.
  • Location: Whether the pregnancy is in the uterus. In rare cases, a pregnancy can implant in a fallopian tube, known as an ectopic pregnancy. This is a medical emergency that cannot be treated with the abortion pill and requires immediate attention.

Side Effects and Risks to Understand

Both types of abortion carry side effects and risks worth knowing before making a decision.

Medical abortion causes abdominal cramping and vaginal bleeding. Other side effects can include nausea, vomiting, fever, chills, and headache. Risks include heavy or prolonged bleeding, infection, and incomplete abortion, where tissue remains in the uterus and may require surgical follow-up.

Surgical abortion typically results in mild cramping and light spotting. Risks associated with this method include perforation of the uterus, damage to the cervix, scar tissue formation inside the uterus, and infection.

Understanding these possibilities is part of making an informed decision about your health.

Talk It Through With Someone You Can Trust

You don’t have to sort through all of this alone. At Rockingham Pregnancy Care Center, our RN provides peer counseling in a confidential, supportive setting where you can ask questions and explore all of your options, parenting, adoption, and abortion, without pressure.

We also provide medical-grade pregnancy testing and ultrasound referrals so you have the information you need before making any decisions.
